This the World Wide Web home page for Dr. Nic Brummell. I am a Senior Research
Associate at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics
(and also associated with the Astrophysical, Planetary and Atmospheric
Science Department) at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado, USA.
The group in which I work is headed by Prof. Juri Toomre and is loosely know as the Laboratory for Computational Dynamics (LCD). The main mission of LCD is to enable research into astrophysically-related numerical models (including solar convection, core convection and magnetohydrodynamics) and helioseismology. The bulk of our work involves heavy use of distributed supercomputing resources and powerful local visualisation workstations.

My work interests lie in astrophysical and planetary fluid dynamics. Most
of my work is related to numerical simulation of idealised models
of solar and planetary fluid dynamics problems, in particular those
involving convection and turbulence.
The picture to the left is a top down view of penetrative convection, a subdued version of which forms the background to this page. Check out the work pages for more info.
My personal life involves a lot of
martial arts,
skiing
and socialising. Boulder, CO has such amazing mountains within
easy reach, that almost anything outdoors goes: skiing, snowboarding,
mountain biking, hiking, camping,
climbing, rollerblading, whitewater rafting, tubing, etc. Of course, then
I have the occasional margarita down at the Rio too ...
